Business recycling and rubbish

Business recycling and rubbish

The City of Hobart supports businesses and commercial properties to manage waste sustainably, as part of our goal to achieve zero waste to landfill by 2030.

We offer several waste management services, and a range of resources to help reduce waste.

These include rubbish, recycling and FOGO collection services, as well as waste compactors for eligible CBD businesses.

Rubbish and recycling collection

Businesses are entitled to a 240-litre rubbish bin collected weekly and a 240-litre recycling bin collected fortnightly. If your waste needs exceed this allocation a private waste company is required.

To request for a rubbish and recycling bin, please complete the customer request form:

Apply online

It is a requirement that bins are stored on the business property (not the street) otherwise a private waste contractor may be necessary.

Place your bin(s) kerbside prior to 5.30 am on the morning of collection and please ensure your bin(s) are brought back onto your premises within 24 hours.

FOGO collection

All City of Hobart businesses, residents and organisations are eligible to receive a FOGO service.

FOGO stands for Food Organics and Garden Organics. FOGO service, all types of organic materials – including food scraps, plate scrapings, plant material, paper towel and compostable packaging can be placed in the bright green lidded organics bin.

The guidelines for businesses outlining what can go in and how to use your FOGO bin are the same as for residents. For more information see the FOGO and compost page.

It is a requirement that bins are stored on the business property.

Businesses that would like to opt-in for a service, can do so by completing one of the forms below depending on whether a weekly or fortnightly service is preferred, this form must be completed by the owner/ratepayer, landlord or authorised persons of the property:

Bin collection day

To check your rubbish, recycle and FOGO waste bin collection days, please use our bin collection function:

When is my bin collected?

You can also print out the relevant calendar:

How to choose the calendar

Please use our bin collection function to see what day your collection falls on. For example, if the search shows your recycling bin collection day is 28 November, look at both calendars. The one that shows 28 November as a recycling collection day (in yellow) is your calendar - Bin Calendar 1.

If the search shows that your recycling is collected on 21 November and you opened Bin Calendar 1 that shows this week as FOGO, that's not your calendar, yours must be Bin Calendar 2.
