When does my parking time begin?
When you park in a metered space your time begins as soon as you arrive. To allow for drivers to get organised at the start and end of their parking session there is a short grace period. Drivers must start the app or pay at the meter as soon as is practicable to avoid overstaying.
Why can't I top up the parking meter?
Staying longer than the allotted time even when paying for extra time is not permitted. For example, more than two hours where a meter is marked as '2P'. It's referred to as 'feeding the meter'. This breaks over-parking laws under section 97 of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982.
Do parking fees increase every year?
Parking fees are reviewed at the end of each financial year as part of the City's financial reporting. Changes to the existing fees and charges structure are considered at that time.
What happens to leftover time on the meters from previous users?
The fees paid for each parking session are non-transferable to the next session. Make sure you don't overpay for your parking by only paying for what you need. The best way to avoid any over payment is by using the EasyPark app. You can stop the meter in the app if you return to your car earlier than expected.
There is a grace period to allow for the next person to get organised at the start and end of their parking session. For more information on how to pay for parking, visit the paying for parking page.
How do I pay for only the time I actually use?
When paying by coins or card, drivers must estimate how long they will park and make a payment to cover this time. This must be within the permitted parking time limit. Coin and card payments must be made at the start of the parking session. Any remaining time will expire once the car leaves the bay.
Using the EasyPark app can be more precise. Payment is only made once the driver presses 'stop' to end the parking session and the car departs the bay. If you wish to make sure you pay only for the exact amount of time you park, the EasyPark app is your best option.
If you're paying by card, there is no longer a minimum charge. The meter will default to an amount depending on the amount per hour of the zone. Your first press of the "-" or "Max" button will activate the card payment side of the meter. Then you are able to select the amount of time you need by again pressing the "-" or "Max" button. This needs to be confirmed with the green tick before processing payment.
Why did the City install parking sensors?
Vehicle Detection Sensors allow the use of the EasyPark app. They also provide us with information about parking usage to inform future planning.
What happens in parking spaces with no sensors?
Areas without sensors will continue to have the timed restrictions enforced.
Why can't I find an active parking area when using the app?
The City of Hobart is operating from a bay-based system with EasyParkin Hobart. Map functionality is not required to use the app, drivers only need to know the bay number of where they want to park. Enter that number when asked to put in the 'Parking Area Code' and begin parking.
How does the EasyPark app know what city I'm in?
Your Parking Area Code (bay number) is unique in Australia and tells the app exactly where you are located. If the app shows you are in the wrong city, double check the number as it most likely has been entered incorrectly.
Does the EasyPark app cost more to use in Hobart?
No. EasyPark's rates are standardised across Australia.
What if I have a problem using the meters or the app?
Refer to the instructions found on the meters. For help with the meters call 03 6238 2751. For more information on the app, call 1300 734 070 or visit the EasyPark website.
On-street parking is too expensive. What should I do?
The City of Hobart also provides around 2500 off-street parking bays. These car parks are cheaper than on-street parking. Free parking is also offered for the first 60 minutes. Resident pensioners receive additional monthly free parking services.
Do I need to pay on public holidays?
On-street parking restrictions do not apply on public holidays. This means you do not need to pay using the meter or EasyPark, and time limits do not apply.
Multi-storey car parks (Argyle Street, Centrepoint and Hobart Central) use the same fees as they do on a Sunday. These can viewed on the car parks page.
Please note: these arrangements apply to gazetted public holidays. This means that when a public holiday falls on a weekend, these arrangements are applied to the day the public holiday is recognised. For example, if New Years Day (January 1) falls on a Saturday, the public holiday will be recognised on the Monday (January 3).
