Hobart's Free E-Bike Library

E-Bike Library

Curious about getting an electric bicycle but not sure if it's the right fit for you? Hobart's Free E-Bike Library lets you take one for a spin - completely free!

What is Hobart's Free E-Bike Library?

This program allows Hobart residents to borrow an e-bike for up to two weeks to see how it fits into your daily life. Whether you're looking to replace short car trips, carry groceries, or transport kids with ease, this initiative allows you to test out an e-bike before making a commitment.

A total of six e-bikes will be available, including cargo bikes (perfect for carrying kids and groceries), step-through commuter bikes (easy to hop on and off) and top-bar commuter bikes (a traditional frame style). Each will come with lights, locks and other accessories.

Once a participant has tried out the bike for their allotted two weeks, they'll return it to the library so that it can be used by the next e-curious cyclist.

This initiative is funded by the Tasmanian Government's Community Climate Change Action Grants Program. The e-bike library will be managed by local bike shop Hobart Bike Hire.

Why try an e-Bike?

E-bikes are growing in popularity each year and are a great, sustainable way to travel. They allow anyone to enjoy a smoother, less strenuous ride and make it easier to ride while carrying children and bulky items.

They can easily be used to replace short trips in the car, allowing the cyclist to reduce the amount they spend on fuel, parking, registration and insurance.

However, they are generally more costly than a traditional push bike so it can be daunting to go out and buy one if you're not absolutely sure it's right for you. That's why we're launching this program!

Who can take part?

To take part in this program, you must be 18 or older and live in Tasmania. You also need to have a safe, secure place to store the e-bike when you're not using it.

It is completely free to take part! The Bicycle Network will also provide participants with a complementary three months of bike riding insurance, covering medical, income and third-party liability.
