Safe Space (Hobart City Mission)

Safe Space offers 24-hour emergency accommodation as well as other forms of assistance.

The program offers a:

  • Day Program in Barrack Street, open 8 am to 6 pm, and is open to all
  • Night Program in Davey Street, open 6 pm to 8 am, and available through referral from Housing Connect.

Developed through conversations with real people sleeping on the streets of Hobart Safe Space was launched in Hobart in December 2019 in partnership with The Salvation Army and the Hobart City Council. The program is now funded by the Tasmanian Government, through Homes Tasmania.

The Salvation Army Tasmania

Salvation Army Housing provides community housing for those who are homeless or at risk, on low incomes, or with specific support needs. They offer long-term housing, transitional housing, crisis accommodation, rooming house properties and Street to Home program.

The Salvation Army Tasmania employs a Primary Homelessness Support Worker to help the growing number of people sleeping rough in the Greater Hobart area. Street to Home locates the ever-increasing number of people sleeping rough, assesses their needs, and links them with crisis support services.

Bethlehem House (St Vincent de Paul)

Offering a modern, safe, and compassionate 24-hour accommodation that provides shelter and support for men who are in crisis or experiencing homelessness. Located in central Hobart, Bethlehem House is the largest provider of crisis and transitional accommodation for men experiencing homelessness in Tasmania. It offers Hobart's only 24 hour staffed service catering solely to men.

Hobart Women's Shelter

Established in 1974, the Hobart Women's Shelter is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that provides safe, emergency accommodation and support to women and children who are affected by family violence and/or those experiencing homelessness.

The Hobart Women's Shelter also provide medium-term accommodation (up to 2 years) for families.
