Street lighting
The City of Hobart is responsible for providing street lighting on local roads in Hobart.
The aim of street lighting is to ensure roads and footpaths are well-lit for the safety and comfort of drivers and pedestrians at night.
TasNetworks maintains street lights and arranges for the replacement of bulbs when required. Street lights that are not working should be reported on the TasNetworks website or by calling 132 004.
Requests for shielding of street lights
For safety reasons, the City cannot modify street lights if it lowers the light level for the road or footpath.
In most cases, adding shields to street lights or changing the type of light would reduce lighting below the minimum required by Australian Standards for road and public space lighting.
In order to investigate the property impact issues of street lights, the resident must demonstrate that they have tried all reasonable ways to reduce the light affecting their property.
You can report lighting issues on our intrusive lighting page.
Requests for additional lighting
Requests for new lighting will be reviewed by our team. If they are warranted, they will be considered in future works.
You can make a request by using our customer request form.
