Public safety cameras

Public safety cameras

Closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems play a vital role in maintaining safety across public spaces in Hobart. These cameras provide real-time monitoring, helping to deter potential offenders by letting them know they're being watched.

CCTV footage also supports Tasmania Police in identifying and prosecuting those involved in criminal or anti-social behaviour.

The presence of CCTV not only helps prevent crime but also gives our community peace of mind, knowing that safety measures are in place. The information gathered through CCTV can be used by the City to review incidents and take proactive steps to improve public safety.

Overall, CCTV is an essential tool in our commitment to keeping Hobart safe, secure, and welcoming for everyone.

About the cameras

Public safety cameras are only installed in public spaces where public safety and/or crime is a proven concern and where infrastructure and technology permits. Our cameras do not monitor residential homes, inside non-council owned assets or inside public amenities.

To ensure we meet our privacy obligations, there are strict policies, procedures and training requirements in place. Signage is in places where public safety cameras are in operation.

Request camera footage

We keep footage captured by our public safety cameras for 31 days. We may keep footage for longer if someone formally requests the footage or if an incident has been recorded.

Whilst we endeavour to maintain a safe environment for the public, businesses tourists, we also acknowledge the importance of maintaining an individual's privacy. The operation of the public safety camera network is done in accordance with the Personal Information Protection Act 2004 (Tas).
