Report potential fire hazards

Report potential fire hazards

Our officers visit properties during the fire permit period as declared by the Tasmania Fire Service to check for fire hazards on private land.

We may inspect a property if:

  • it is in a bushfire prone area
  • we have received reports of possible fire hazards on a property
  • a property has been referred to us by the Tasmania Fire Service.

If a private property becomes a fire hazard the City of Hobart is legally obliged to manage the risk.

If a property has a fire hazard, we will issue the land owner with a Fire Hazard Abatement Notice by mail. This notice identifies the hazard and states what action needs to be taken and when.

If you believe there is a fire hazard on a property you can report it by phone on 03 6238 2711 or email coh@hobartcity.com.au. Please include details of the property and the hazard. All reports are kept confidential.

Responding to a notice

If you, as a land owner, receive a Fire Hazard Abatement Notice, you must complete the works detailed in the notice by the due date.

If you cannot complete the work yourself, it is recommended you seek service providers or contractors to undertake the work for you. You can find a contractor in your area by searching for 'tree shrub removal' or 'garden and lawn maintenance' on the internet or in the Yellow Pages.

The City of Hobart offers a Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) green waste collection service for lawn clippings and garden waste.

Extensions to the due date of a Fire Hazard Abatement Notice are only provided in extreme circumstances. If you require an extension, please contact us as soon as possible.

If the hazard is not removed, we will take action to ensure the property is made safe. We may engage a contractor to undertake vegetation clearance and hazard reduction on the property on your behalf. Any costs associated with the necessary works, along with an administration fee, will be charged to the land owner.

It is important to clear any hazards exactly as requested. If work to clear the hazard is not complete, a Failure to Comply notice will be issued.
