From Heaven Comes Earthly Music
Allegri Ensemble is thrilled to be celebrating the 250th anniversary of this exuberant and joyous mass setting.
Our two performances (3 pm and 8 pm) will feature a 19-part classical orchestra and esteemed soloists Molly Ryan (soprano), Sally-Anne Russell (alto), Jiacheng Ding (tenor) and Samuel Dundas (bass).
Join us as we transform the Hobart Town Hall into an intimate classical 'salon' – you will feel very much a part of the performance!
About Missa Cellensis
Joseph Haydn wrote his Zell Mass in honour of the most blessed Virgin Mary in 1766 for the Pilgrimage Church of Mariazell, the quintessential place of pilgrimage for the Habsburg empire.
It is still the most important pilgrimage destination in Austria, where people come to venerate a lindenwood image of the Virgin Mary.
Haydn made his own pilgrimage as a young man to hear the beautiful church music there, and when his score for the Mass was destroyed by fire just 2 years after writing it, he re-wrote it from memory in an expanded form in 1773.
Proudly supported by the City of Hobart through our Creative Hobart Grants Program.
