Public meeting in response to Collins Street bike lanes petition

The City of Hobart will hold a public meeting on Tuesday 25 March 2025 in response to a petition regarding the Transforming Collins Street project which involves a variety of tactical trial changes including streetside dining areas and separated cycle lanes. The petition requested:

• We the undersigned request that pursuant to section 59 of the Local Government Act 1993, the Hobart City Council hold a public meeting regarding the proposed Collins Street bike lanes.

In accordance with s60 of the Local Government Act 1993 ("the Act") the General Manager (also known as the Chief Executive Officer) is to advise the Council within 42 days after the tabling of the petition whether the petition complies with s59 of the Act so that the Council can determine any action to be taken in respect of the petition.

This action occurred at the Council meeting on 24 February 2025 whereat the Council resolved that the number of signatories to the petition, verified signatures as being 1,014, met the criteria required under s 59(2) of the Local Government Act 1993 and that a public meeting will be held.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday 25 March 2025 at 5.30 pm at the Town Hall, 50 Macquarie Street, Hobart. This will be a ticketed (free) event which will be open from 26 February 2025.

Once the Council noted its intention to conduct a public meeting, a number of triggers were enacted under s60A of the Act:

1. The Council has 30 days after the day on which it makes the decision to conduct the public meeting;
2. The Council must advertise the details of the meeting twice, invite public submissions in relation to the subject matter of the meeting and provide a period of 21 days after the first advertisement for the receipt of submissions;
3. A summary of all submissions received is to be made available to those attending the public meeting.

Written submissions are invited in relation to the subject matter via the Your Say Hobart webpage.

Submissions must be lodged no later than 12 midnight on Tuesday 18 March 2025. Postal or hand delivered submissions must be received before 5.15 pm on the same day.

Attending the meeting

There is the opportunity for individuals to participate in the meeting however, due to capacity within the Town Hall this will be a ticketed (free) event.

Tickets will be available at 9 am Wednesday 26 February 2025.
