Tie your hopes to Hobart’s Hope Tree

E-Hobart-Hope-Tree.jpg

Inspired by a popular Japanese custom we are inviting people to write down their hopes for a brighter future and tie them to the Hobart Hope Tree in Collins Court.

In Japan, people inscribe a special wish on colourful strips of paper and tie them to a bamboo tree ahead of Tanabata, the star festival.

In Hobart we are taking inspiration from this custom, giving everyone a chance to make a special wish for the future, a wish full of hope beyond the anxiety caused by COVID-19.

You’ll find Hobart’s Hope Tree in Collins Court. We’ll bring the pens – sanitised, of course – and coloured ribbons.

All you have to do is come along and write down your hopes and dreams for the year ahead and beyond, and let them hang next to the dreams of others.

PS Thought to have originated from the Chinese Qixi Festival, in Japan Tanabata celebrates the meeting of two star-crossed lovers, the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi, who are represented by the stars Vega and Altair and can only meet once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month.
