Mayoral Reception - Royal Hobart Regatta Reception

Royal Hobart Regatta Reception

The Lord Mayor, Cr Anna Reynolds held a reception to mark the 187th Royal Hobart Regatta.

The first "Hobart Town" Regatta was held on the first of December in 1838 where, according to a report in the newspaper, some ten thousand people attended, "the sun shone forth with unclouded splendour" and "His Excellency [Sir John Franklin] enjoyed it with a most vivacious relish"!

The event was so well received it was hoped it would become a permanent fixture in the town calendar.

In its history, the Regatta has seen 10 royal visits and a record-breaking attendance of 80 000 people in one day in 1955, a number close to the entire population of Hobart at the time.

It is clear the Regatta is a much beloved Hobart institution, an event many people look forward to each summer.
