Get ready for back to school with these five tips: explore alternative transport options, enjoy Youth ARC’s afterschool programs, compost uneaten lunches with FOGO, enrol in swim lessons at Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre, and unwind at one of Hobart’s parks and playgrounds.

1. Transport

Once you've gotten through the tumultuous start to the school year, it could be good to consider ways to drop off your children other than simply driving them - such as public transport, walking or cycling.

These methods save money, provide physical and mental benefits, and are a great way to bond with your children.

Take a moment to plan a safe route to school that you and your kids would feel comfortable taking and give it a crack.

2. Youth Arts and Recreation Centre

The City of Hobart's Youth Arts and Recreation Centre (YARC) is a terrific, safe and welcoming space for ages 12-25. It is ideal for after school, offering social, creative and inclusive programs.

Activities include drop-in sessions, workshops in art, music and dance, youth publications, performance opportunities, leadership programs and community collaborations. Facilities include a basketball court, games, a dance stage, a recording studio, an art gallery, and more.

For more information, visit the YARC website.

3. FOGO

Nothing says school's back like sending lovingly prepared lunches off each day only to see them come back uneaten.

Instead of just chucking them into general waste, make sure they go into your FOGO bin or turn them into a feast for the garden by creating your own compost.

For more information, visit the FOGO and compost page.

4. Learn to swim

School is back, and so is the Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre's Learn to Swim classes.

It is not too late to enrol in the program and there are spots still available for this vital life skill. Lessons are tailored for all age groups in a fun, supportive environment.

For enquiries about the aquatic programs and enrolments, email the team at dkhac@hobartcity.com.au

5. Parks and playgrounds

Returning to school can be a little daunting so why not reward the kids on their first day or week back to school with a visit to one of the City of Hobart's fantastic parks or playgrounds?

The City has a wide range of swings, slides and play equipment for children to let their hair down and have some fun.

See the full list of parks on our find a park or reserve page, or find your nearest park using our map of parks, sportsgrounds and reserves.
