So you’re planning a trip to Salamanca Market but not sure what to expect. Will there be food? Will it be good? Should you grab breakfast before you go? Or stay hungry for the tastings?

We all know Tassie is renowned for its fine produce, trendy cafes, hidden gems and fine restaurants, but the big question is, what can you find at this weekly market?

We’ve compiled a short list to help with your foodie adventure. It’s just a few of our most heartwarming foodie stalls, and a tempter of the Tasmanian tastes that are waiting for you to enjoy.

Our top five food stalls to visit this winter

1. Truffle Toasties

A premium, crunchy, scrumptious, cheesy toasty with black Tasmanian truffles. This is possibly the most decadent toasted sandwich you will ever taste, made with Pigeon Whole crusty breads and Ashgrove cheeses and with the delicate flavours of earthy truffles.

Tasmanian Truffles are producers of the finest black truffles, truffle oils and truffle salts and it’s great to see them step into the kitchen and showcase their products. Don’t be put off by the price - it’s not cheap, but it is restaurant quality.  It’s the OMG moment you are looking for. Grab one to share and then go back for more.

The stylish black Truffle Toasties truck is at site 221 every Saturday, toasting up the best!

2. Rockwall at the market

Try anything on the menu from this stall and you’ll be lining up to book a table at their restaurant that evening! The menu is full of Tasmanian produce and from some of the best producers in the state. On the menu is Cape Grim eye fillet skewers and Scottsdale pork belly – they are small bites but cooked to BBQ perfection. Then there is a fabulous creamy seafood chowder. The worst thing about this stall is having to wait while smelling and watching other people’s orders come out. Well worth it though!

You can find them at the silos end of the market, site 311 each week.

3. Deep End Farm

You know when a food stall has it right as there is always a queue. Deep End Farm make Taiwanese steamed buns and they are super soft, piping hot and have plenty of flavour. This is one stall that takes its buns seriously and with craftsmanship and authenticity. They grow all of the herbs, vegetables and animals at their sustainable property in Geeveston, so it’s a farm to plate story. Select from beef, pork or vegan varieties. If you can’t decide, grab one of each and you won’t regret it, as they are all delicious.

Find them at 151, right near Gladstone Street roundabout.

4. Cantina Latina

There is a cultural taste and Latin American vibe to enjoy at the Cantina Latina stall each week and their empanadas are handmade, authentic and perfect to crunch into on a winters day. Everything is handmade at the stall, from the prepping of the ingredients, to the pressing of the empanadas, ensuring that every one goes out hot and fresh with a serve of handmade chilli sauce. Grab a seat at one of their bar stools and hang out as you work your way through their delicious menu – pino, vegetarian, vegan and tres quesos.

You can find them at site 49 each week, on the Gladstone Roundabout.

5. Lady Hester

What would a market visit be without a decadent treat to finish? Lady Hester is well known in local circles and make, quite possibly, the best sourdough donuts you’ll ever find. The fillings are indulgent and well-crafted, and there is nothing quite like a gourmet sourdough donut, covered in sugar and eaten straight from the bag. The menu reads like an artisan kitchen with varieties such as ‘vanilla custard and pistachio’, ‘dark chocolate, sea salt + leatherwood honeycomb’ or a classic ‘lemon curd’. Eat from the bag or buy a box to go – you won’t regret it.

Lady Hester are casual stallholders and will be at a different site each week, so check the Salamanca Market website to find where they will be located.
