Free Wheel'n

Long known as a destination of choice for hikers and trail runners, the foothills of kunanyi / Mt Wellington have also become a must stop visit for mountain bike riders.

The tracks on kunanyi take riders through beautiful tall wet forests, past fern glades and across free-flowing rivulets, and quickly give you the sense of being in wild country, far from the city bustle below.

Ride the mountain

We've curated a great mountain biking circuit called Riding the Mountain. An intermediate track, it starts at The Springs, a perfect ride hub for many of the rides on the mountain.

Lost Freight Café, which operates out of an old shipping container, serves up hot drinks and great food if you need to fuel up before exploring the mountain tracks.

Start off on Free Wheel'n

Ride the Mountain starts on one of the newest tracks on the mountain, Free Wheel'n, an exhilarating descent that drops off the North-South Track, and starts at 600m above sea level.

Free Wheel'n promises a rush of adrenaline as you navigate its twists and turns through lush forests, creek crossings and rocky outcrops.

Next stop, Pitfall and Stumpside

From Free Wheel'n find your way on to Pitfall, Stumpside, Middle Island Fire Trail and the Upper Luge Track.

Each section offers their own challenges and rewards, from technical descents to fast-flowing single tracks to push your riding skills.

Time to climb

Once you bottom out at the end of the Upper Luge it's time to climb. Riding uphill will be challenging, but it's worth it as you ascend back up the mountain via first Crosscut, then Middle Island Fire Trail, Stumpside, Pitfall and finally back on to Rocky Wheel'n.
