Faded, illegible parking bay numbers are set to become a thing of the past in Hobart, following the installation of new, permanent metal plates with clear details.

Bay numbers are a key feature in the city’s parking system, allowing motorists to identify their specific parking spot when paying at a meter or on the EasyPark app.

These numbers were originally installed on thermite plates at each parking spot. However, these would crack or delaminate over time, sometimes making the figures almost impossible to read.

Renee and Michael from the City's parking team say the faded numbers caused frustration for locals and the enforcement team.

Other bay numbers were simply painted directly onto the kerb but would fade over time due to weather damage, meaning they would require constant replenishing from council workers.

Andrew, from the City’s parking services team, said these issues meant many drivers were often left trying to decipher numbers that had worn away.

“We were receiving a lot of complaints from our customers and also from our parking enforcement team because of the faded numbers,” he said.

“That’s why we identified the etched plates as a cost-effective, sustainable alternative.”

It is hoped the metal plates will reduce confusion and streamline the parking process for locals.

Plates hailed as long-term solution

The new metal plates are made from marine-grade aluminium, designed to withstand Hobart’s variable weather conditions without fading, cracking or peeling.

Michael, who is the City’s parking maintenance officer, said it was “without a doubt” a solution to the previous number issues.

“As far as the durability goes it’s just fantastic, and zero maintenance – once you put it down it’s there,” he said.

“There’s been lots of positive feedback. It’s almost given me a new lease on life.”

The plates will be installed throughout the CBD over the course of the year.

More than 400 of the plates have already been installed along Davey, Macquarie, Collins and Liverpool streets, with about 2000 more set to go in across the rest of the year.

The plates are installed flush with the kerb at each parking bay, ensuring they remain visible while not creating a tripping hazard.

Andrew said he hopes the plates significantly improve the parking experience for both motorists and enforcement officers by reducing confusion, streamlining payments and eliminating the need for ongoing maintenance.
