Pizza ovens fire up for school holiday feast on the Domain

11 July 2024

Twelve hours before the morning light hits the Queens Domain next Wednesday, 17 July, our oven coordinators will be firing up the two big wood-fired ovens at Legacy Park.

They need both ovens raring to go as soon as the first families arrive for our special school holidays free community bake day, 12 noon to 3pm, where you bring your own pizza dough and toppings, and our oven coordinators cook your pizza in the wood-fired ovens.

There will also be a face painter onsite for the kids and a coffee van for the big people.

But before anything can be cooked our oven coordinators first need to bring the ovens up to temperature, and just like all good things in life, bringing a wood-fired oven up to speed takes care, love and time.

One oven is ideal for roast meats and vegetables, oven-baked bread and even desserts.

The second oven gets much, much hotter. It needs to hit almost 500 degrees celsius by the time the lunchtime crowds arrive with their home-made pizza doughs and toppings.

A pizza takes less than a minute to cook in the hot oven, and if the dough has been kneaded and prepared with love, expect pockets of hot air to create a beautiful, puffed crust, and for the scorching heat to leave char marks.

A cool school holidays adventure for the kids

This is the first time we have held a community bake day mid week, instead of just every second Sunday.

Let the kids explore the Legacy Park play area while you prep the pizzas or carve up a roasted chicken.

And while we will supply a small range of pizzas for tasting, we don’t expect them to last long, so make sure to bring your own pizza or delicious dish and our oven coordinator will help you cook it.

And if your dish needs an hour or two in the slower oven you can drop it off at 11am and come back later when you think it will be ready. Just have a chat with our oven coordinators.

A family affair

We've been running our free community bake days at Legacy Park for more than seven years, and while it has become a much-loved Sunday haunt for many Hobart families, many others are yet to discover this fabulous, free offering.

Twice a month, year round, our oven coordinators fire up the wood-fired pizza ovens and help families and friends cook up their favourite Sunday lunches.

Pizzas are by far the most popular items to cook, and our oven coordinators will make sure your pizza is cooked to order.

You just need to bring the base, sauce and toppings. You also need your own pizza trays, rolling pin and a pizza cutter, and cornmeal to keep the base from sticking to the hot oven bricks.

The pizzas come out piping hot, so a cooling rack comes in handy too.

If you have any dietary special requirements, please don’t hesitate to talk to the coordinators who will do their best to provide safely cooked food for you.

Low and slow

If you'd like to cook something over a few hours on a Sunday, you can drop off your pre-prepared dish at 11am and we'll sit it in the slower oven for when you return later in the day.

Or maybe home-made bread is your thing? All types of breads work well in the wood-fired ovens, but you may need to allow extra time to prove the dough after you arrive on site. Speak to one of the oven coordinators if you need a warm spot to leave your dough to rise.

If you'd like more cooking tips visit our Legacy Park web page.

Relax while the kids explore

The wood-fired pizza ovens sit in a beautifully designed, sheltered space with big long communal tables right next to a fabulous nature play area with swings, a climbing wall and an amazing sand pit.

There is plenty of seating, and if you’d like to kick off your heels there are plenty of grassed picnic spots where you can throw a rug out and set yourself up for the afternoon.
