23 May 2024

Lisa Rime felt the fear of homelessness so now she is devoting her energy to help those enduring the same stress with charity group Short of a Sheet.

Short of a Sheet is one of the many charitable organisations the City of Hobart is supporting as part of its “City of Warm Hearts and Cool Adventures” winter campaign.

The campaign’s aim is twofold – encouraging locals and visitors to get out and about and enjoy the many programs, events and festivals on in winter (Cool Adventures) and supporting charity organisations who are looking after those in need during the coldest months (Warm Hearts).

Short of a Sheet is a micro-charity, with a five-person volunteer board providing toiletries, clothing, food and furniture for those at risk of or enduring homelessness.

“I've experienced housing stress,” Lisa says. “I never experienced homelessness, but I got the fear poured into me, and just that was enough to realise that it's terrible.

“Housing is foundational to absolutely everything in our lives, and to have a threat to that undermines everything.

“People who are experiencing that are very, very vulnerable.  And when we look at the statistics, the leading cause of homelessness in Australia at the moment used to be family violence, but now it's a lack of access to affordable housing.

“It's something people don't have any control of whatsoever. It's not a moral failing at all.

“People are not doing anything wrong, and we as a community have a duty to look after each other.

“Change always comes from the grassroots.”

The biggest demand for Short of a Sheet (the name originating from Cockney slang for “on the street”) is for socks, underwear and toiletries, which all must be bought brand new.

They would also love to acquire a headquarters to store furniture and other larger donated items for when required. Short of a Sheet’s Facebook page lists its current callouts and information about donating and volunteering.

Short of a Sheet is one of 15 community organisations highlighted on the City of Hobart’s Wall of Warm Hearts in the Elizabeth Street Mall. All of these organisations are helping vulnerable locals throughout winter.

For those seeking a "Cool Adventure”, there are plenty of options to explore, from the scenic tracks and trails around Hobart to the bustling Salamanca Market as well as the myriad of festivals and events.

The city also boasts a range of cafes, restaurants, bars, and art trails, providing ample opportunities for locals and visitors to enjoy.

The City has partnered with a number of organisations who are all seeking assistance and/or donations to help others in our community.
