Walk the winter blues away

Hobart's hinterland tracks and trails are the perfect places to walk the winter blues away.

Despite the cooler temperatures, winter is the perfect time to explore many of our walking tracks, not just on kunanyi/Mt Wellington but also down in the mountain’s foothills.

Two of our favourite places to explore are Knocklofty Reserve in West Hobart, and Waterworks Reserve in Dynnyrne. And you can’t beat the Organ Pipes Track or the newly-restored Zig Zag Track in on kunanyi/Mt Wellington in winter, just make sure you are prepared for very cold conditions and possible snow.

Taking a walk along the many tracks and trails in Wellington Park, Knocklofty or Waterworks reserves when the air is crisp is sure to lift your spirits, and both reserves are havens for native wildlife like wallabies, echidnas, bandicoots and birds.

The colder months are when some of our most colourful bird species move to lower areas, so keep an eye out for flame robins and scarlet robins. The black currawong is another bird more to look out for in our urban bushland reserves at this time of the year.

Waterworks Reserve - Reservoir Circuit

An easy loop walk through bush and parkland with playground areas and barbecue facilities. The Waterworks Reserve is a popular spot for family celebrations. Barbecue shelters can be booked in advance through the City of Hobart.

The loop walk winds around the edge of the upper and lower reservoirs. A shorter option is to make a loop around just one reservoir. Keep your eyes open within the bushland section of the walk as these are excellent places to observe a variety of marsupials, birds and fungi.

Another great walk in Waterworks Reserve is the Circle Track via Gentle Annie Falls.

Knocklofty Reserve - Summit Circuit

A great loop track through open forest, close to the city centre. Knocklofty Reserve is popular with dog walkers and bike riders.

This walk takes you past many of Knocklofty’s highlights. At the Frog Ponds, the Friends of Knocklofty Bushcare group have rehabilitated a disused dam to create a wetland habitat. Pause here a moment… how many different frog calls you can hear?

From various vantage points along the walk you can enjoy views across the city, up to kunanyi/Mt Wellington and down the River Derwent. With more 300 native plant species in this much-loved reserve, there is always something in flower.

Also of interest is the Glover Track, which leads to the view of Hobart painted by celebrated 19th century landscape artist John Glover.

Layer up for your adventure

Dressing for Tasmania’s fickle winter weather is the key to making the most out of your winter walks.

Layer up with moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers and a waterproof outer shell to stay warm and dry. And don't forget a hat, gloves and sturdy footwear with good traction.

Pack plenty of water to stay hydrated, along with high-energy snacks to fuel your journey. And, of course, don't leave home without a fully charged phone and a map or GPS device.

Hobart’s camping and hiking stores are often the first port of call for many visitors flying into Hobart to walk the Overland or the Three Capes tracks, and so we are blessed with local options for buying the best walking gear.

There are also many great options for a hot cup of coffee or a hearty lunch at one of the many charming cafes and eateries scattered around Hobart's trailheads.

What to wear and pack

Plan your hike properly to make sure your winter adventure is a safe and happy one.

  • Before heading out, check the weather forecast and trail conditions to ensure a safe and enjoyable outing.
  • Be prepared for sudden changes in weather, including rain, wind, or even snow at higher elevations.
  • Adjust your plans accordingly and consider choosing shorter, more sheltered routes if conditions are unfavourable.
  • Let someone know your itinerary and expected return time, especially if you're venturing into more remote areas.
  • Always prioritise safety over pushing your limits—know when to turn back if conditions become too challenging.

With careful planning and preparation, your winter adventure in Hobart's bushland will be a memorable and happy one.
