The call has gone out for young people in Hobart to put their thinking caps on and submit their big ideas to help tackle climate change.
The City of Hobart, together with Bloomberg Philanthropies, has launched the second round of the Youth Climate Action Fund, which will look to provide up to $7500 to help young changemakers, aged 15 to 24, bring their climate solutions to life across Hobart.

Leading the way
Katherine Bourne, pictured top, studies marine biology at the University of Tasmania and is a member of the Tasmanian University Environment Society, which received a Youth Climate Action Fund in 2024.
Katherine and the team used the fund to create an Environmental Art Auction and ran a highly successful and innovative Commute4Climate campaign, where 773 participants chose walking, cycling, catching the bus or ferry over driving.
Over the course of just one month Commute4Climate participants prevented 1000 kilograms of carbon dioxide from being emitted into the atmosphere by choosing to avoid car travel.
“As an environmental and marine biology student I am acutely aware of the crises we are facing on a global scale,” says Katherine.
“With the salp, algal, and jellyfish blooms here in our local waterways and the looming threat of catastrophic bushfires in the north of the state we can't afford to be wasting time.
“We need to be inspiring change and solutions within our young communities and offering some amount of hope to the generations to follow us.
“We hope that climate focused initiatives run by a bunch of over-exhausted and unruly local environmental students has shown at least one person that it's not all 'doom and gloom' when it comes to climate change.
“Change is possible no matter how big or small and the Youth Climate Action Fund offered by the City of Hobart is a great resource to be utilised by local youth.”
Turn your climate passion into action
Hobart Lord Mayour Councillor Anna Reynolds said the Youth Climate Action Fund is an incredible opportunity for young people in Hobart to turn their passion and ideas for tackling climate change into action.
"This is a chance for our young people to be part of a global movement of youth leaders ready to help save the planet with their big ideas and to help Hobart reach our goal of zero emissions by 2040.
“The first round of the Youth Climate Action Fund saw hundreds of young people across Hobart take meaningful action on climate.
"We are looking for projects that will help our community reduce emissions particularly from petrol, diesel and gas as well as to help us be better prepared for extreme weather and other climate challenges.
“Ultimately this is about having hundreds of actions across the city where young people show us how to be climate ready. That it is real and tangible and inspires us all to get more people involved in the daily choices we can take to fight against climate change.
“If you are aged 15 to 24 and have a big idea to help save the planet then we want to hear from you.”
