The City of Hobart today advised the Mount Wellington Cableway Company (MWCC) that it had not fully satisfied the original request for further information for its kunanyi/Mount Wellington cable car proposal.

“A panel of external assessment experts has determined that the additional information submitted by the proponent on 6 January does not fully satisfy the original request for further information made in July 2019,” City of Hobart General Manager Nick Heath said.

“As such, we have gone back to the proponent stating what further information they still need to lodge to the City of Hobart, as the Planning Authority, to enable us to fully assess the planning application.”

Mr Heath acknowledged that the proponent had submitted a lot of additional information and much of it was sufficient.

However, further information is still required from the proponent around numerous matters including Aboriginal heritage, traffic impacts, bushfire planning, biodiversity impacts, sewage management and disposal, and geotechnical assessments.

The following steps in the planning process are now expected:

  • The proponent has been advised of the need for further information and the assessment process will remain on hold until such time that further information is supplied.
  • Once that information is provided, it will be reviewed by the panel of external assessment experts to determine whether it satisfies the original request for further information made in July 2019.
  • That review must be completed within 14 days.
  • If the additional information submitted is deemed satisfactory at that point by the Planning Authority, the planning application will be publicly advertised for a period of between 14 and 28 days, as prescribed by the Land Use Planning and Approvals Act.
  • During this time, any member of the public can make a formal representation either for or against the proposal, to be considered as part of the assessment process.
  • If the additional information submitted is still not found to satisfy all components of the request for further information, the proponent will again be advised and the process will again go on hold until such time that further information is supplied.

The City of Hobart will provide updates to the public and media as the assessment process progresses. More information is available at hobartcity.com.au/development/planning/cablecar.
