Hobart Together: Physically distanced but still connected

Stories of kindness and messages of support to lift the spirits of others are invited to be shared through an online, interactive message board.

As part of the City of Hobart’s Hobart Together initiative, the City’s Your Say community engagement website has become an interactive message board, where people who live, work or visit Hobart can share their thoughts and stories while undertaking physical isolation.

Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said it was important to stay connected with others and to share positive experiences.

“Physical distancing should not mean social isolation,” Cr Reynolds said. “We need each other more than ever. Creating a sense of community and turning our focus towards the positives in our lives goes a long way in dealing with the stresses of separation.

“If your neighbour does something nice for you, let others know about that act of kindness – however big or small. Share your positive thoughts and messages, ideas to stay active at home, or anything that will make others smile.”

Also included on the page is a short survey, through which participants can provide feedback on the type of response to COVID-19 they would like to see from the City of Hobart.

“We want people to tell us what sort of help they need and how the City might be able to contribute to that,” Cr Reynolds said. “The survey will also help us to better understand how people have been individually impacted, as well as the effects on our community as a whole.”

The first phase of Hobart Together was launched last week, featuring a series of web pages containing useful information, advice and support resources.

“Hobart Together’s key message is ‘physically distanced but still connected’. We are aiming to connect people with the services they need, provide advice and information around staying healthy mentally and physically, and offer support through grants and other measures.

“Importantly, it also reminds us to be kind – both to ourselves and to others.”

Hobart Together is an initiative by the City of Hobart under its Resilient Hobart program.
