After-dark hospitality accounts for almost 14 per cent of Hobart’s employment, according to industry research released last week.
Measuring the Australian Night Time Economy 2018, released by the Council of Capital City Lord Mayors (CCCLM), found that the national night time economy was worth $134 billion.
Of that, Hobart’s night time venues (operating between 6 pm and 6 am) contribute $757 million – the majority of which is driven by a growing food sector.
“We’ve seen particularly strong growth around food establishments, which contribute $440 million to the local economy and employ 4350 people,” said Hobart Lord Mayor and CCCLM Chair Anna Reynolds.
“Hobart’s reputation for quality restaurants and food options continues to grow, as demonstrated by this report.”
Data for the 2017-18 financial year demonstrates an additional 35 establishments and an extra 165 people employed in the sector – a 4 per cent increase. Sales turnover grew by 8.6 per cent compared to the previous year, well above the national average of 5.8 per cent.
“But our entertainment sector is also gaining strength, with an 11 per cent increase in sales turnover – or an extra $22 million – compared to the previous year.”
In total, 6625 people were employed at more than 500 venues and businesses across the three key categories of the night time economy – food, drink and entertainment – in Hobart, accounting for almost 14 per cent of the city’s employment.
“It’s clear that our vibrant nightlife not only contributes to the liveability of our city, but it is also an integral part of Hobart’s economy,” Cr Reynolds said.
