Hobart Town Hall’s spectacular pipe organ will be the centrepiece in a series of music performances that will lead to the instrument’s 150th anniversary celebration.
A series of 10 lunchtime concerts featuring the renowned Van Dieman’s Band will be held in the Town Hall from next month. The hall’s pipe organ, which was installed in 1870 and features 1926 pipes, will be played during some of the concerts.
“These concerts will provide a wonderful opportunity to hear the pipe organ in all its glory and to appreciate some of the amazing musical talent that exists in our city,” Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said.
“The Van Dieman’s Band comprises some of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra’s most acclaimed musicians and we’re thrilled to be able to host them in our heritage Town Hall to celebrate the upcoming milestone.”
The 45-minute concerts will feature a mixture of world-class musicians who are based locally, nationally and internationally.
To conclude the season, a celebration event will be held on Sunday 22 March 2020 to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the pipe organ’s installation in 1870.
“The community event will feature one of Australia’s most accomplished pipe organists, Thomas Heywood, playing a variety of pieces that have featured in the Town Hall during the organ’s lifespan,” Cr Reynolds said.
“We look forward to announcing more details in the coming months.”
