Zig Zag Track storm repairs to start

Works to fully restore kunanyi/Mt Wellington’s Zig Zag Track will start next week as part of ongoing recovery efforts following the severe flood event that hit Hobart in May 2018.

To allow works to proceed safely, the track will be closed on weekdays from Wednesday January 15 until Friday 14 February 2020. It will be opened on weekends to provide access to walkers.

The Zig Zag Track is the quickest walking route from The Springs to the mountain summit and features spectacular views over the River Derwent and Hobart.

“Repairing storm damage on the Zig Zag Track will benefit all track users, including runners, walkers, locals and tourists,” said Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds.

“Fortunately we will be able to keep this popular route open to the summit of kunanyi/Mt Wellington on weekends while repair works are carried out during the week.

“We are also lucky enough to have plenty of other great walk options on the mountain, including the fabulous Organ Pipes Track and many charming little walks starting from The Springs and lower down at Fern Tree.”

The restoration works are expected to take five to six weeks and will include the use of a helicopter to transport materials to the site.

It’s part of a $1.67 million program to repair approximately 40 kilometres of fire trails, walking tracks and other bushland infrastructure damaged during the flood event in May 2018.

The project is jointly funded by the Australian and Tasmanian Governments under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements

The total cost of restoring community infrastructure, facilities and recreational assets damaged by the flood is $3.2 million.
