6 Argyle Street Car Park Storeys 6 Hobart Stories
Published on 01 June 2022
Storytelling is a powerful aspect of human culture, and one of the most ubiquitous customs throughout human history.
Some of the City of Hobart’s quirkiest stories will now feature as wayfinding graphic murals as part of a refurbishment of the Argyle Street Carpark.
Six Storeys, Six Stories is a creative concept by Hobart-based Studio Decade who were selected out of twenty submissions from an expression of interest process to replace the previous works, which had degraded after more than twenty years of directing Hobartians in the carpark.
“Six Storeys, Six Stories highlights a number of historical events and people from Hobart, focusing on some of the more obscure stories,” Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said. “Stories that have left the news cycle but still live on anecdotally.”
Each level features a large graphic mural, accompanied by explanatory text written by local writer Chas Bayfield. The stories and images will also be available to share via a QR code linking to the City of Hobart public art web page which will provide additional information as well as accessibility options including audio of the stories on each level.
“We are hopeful that these new stories will be enjoyed by the whole community, both local and tourists.” Lord Mayor Reynolds said.
Argyle Street carpark caters to approximately 3 million visitors each year, and is a key point of arrival in the Hobart CBD for locals and visitors alike.
