Community input invited to help shape North Hobart

The City of Hobart’s draft North Hobart Neighbourhood Plan is now open for public feedback to guide the sustainable development of the area over the next 20 years.

This structure plan will align with state, regional, and local land use strategies, informing future land zoning and reflecting community aspirations.

The draft plan, which incorporates feedback from previous community consultations and the 2021 Vision for the area, is now open for public feedback until 31 August.

The North Hobart Neighbourhood Plan includes a range of strategies and actions aimed at enhancing the area.

These include providing opportunities for affordable, medium-density housing in strategic locations and enhancing key features through urban design guidelines with maximum building heights.

A successful medium-density housing project has recently been completed with 29 new social housing units significantly increasing housing opportunities for Tasmanians in need in Letitia Street.

This project, run by Centacare Evolve Housing, includes 21 one-bedroom units offering housing options to a mixed cohort including over 55s and young people.

The plan also supports business revitalisation and the activation of the high street precinct, including wider footpaths for pedestrians and outdoor dining retention.

Additionally, the plan seeks to support renewal of underutilised areas in the high street precinct and the Providence Valley Rivulet area for mixed-use development.

There will be opportunities to strategically renew council assets, potentially creating a community centre, arts space, and new public open spaces.

Public safety improvements for pedestrians and cyclists, along with strategically located bus shelters, are also part of the plan to enhance the comfort of public transport users.

Community members can provide their feedback through an online survey open until 31 August 2024 here.

A pop-up stall will also be available for in-person feedback on Saturday, 10 August, from 9am to 11am at Soundy Park, located at the corner of Argyle and Burnett streets, North Hobart.
