The City of Hobart has just released its Mid-Term Report which highlights its key achievements over the past two years.
Released to mark the halfway point of the current Council’s four-year term, the Report shows strong progress has been made on a range of projects in alignment with the City’s Strategic Plan.
"This Report showcases the significant progress we have made in the past two years on many community priorities, from major infrastructure upgrades to strategic plans that are all about making Hobart an efficient and vibrant place to live and work,” Lord Mayor Councillor Anna Reynolds said.
During its current term of Council, the City of Hobart has increased its underlying budget surplus from $6.7 million to $7.5 million while also expanding total assets from $2.6 billion to $3.4 billion.
This surplus means the City has increased opportunities to invest back into the community through a range of services and programs.
Council has been able to repay $10.1 million in City borrowings.
"Our strong financial management is a testament to the hard work of the dedicated people who work for Hobart City Council,” Cr Reynolds said.
“The increase in our budget surplus has meant more money for infrastructure upgrades in vital precincts like Salamanca and North Hobart, enhancing our waste collection services and completing necessary restoration work on lookouts and tracks on our beloved kunanyi/Mount Wellington.”
The Mid-Term Report details many other key achievements such as the finalisation of the Central Hobart Plan which will guide and shape the future development of the CBD, securing Federal Government funding for emergency management planning and the approval of residential and commercial projects worth over $435 million.
Some of the significant infrastructure projects include pedestrian upgrades in Salamanca and New Town, restoring the 100-year-old Zig Zag Track and Springs Lookout and a range of renewals at the Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre.
The City also continues to support Hobart’s most iconic events like Dark Mofo, the Beaker Street Festival, the Festival of Voices and Taste of Summer.
Cr Reynolds is excited to build on the progress the Council has made so far.
"Looking back on the past two years, I'm optimistic about the future and proud of the positive outcomes our collective efforts have achieved for the City of Hobart," she said.
