A disused quarry at Lenah Valley has been put to the market to gauge development interest.

The City of Hobart has launched an Expressions of Interest process for the sale or lease of currently unused land, with the aim of providing an economic or community benefit to Hobart.

The Council resolved in September 2021 to seek Expressions of Interest for the lease or sale of parts of the Giblin Street Quarry that are no longer used by the City of Hobart.

The land, which once contained an asphalt plant and several quarries, has been rehabilitated in recent years, and is offered to the market in two sections.

The larger of the land options is located at the “Upper Quarry” and is suitable for industrial use. With a shortage of industrial land in inner-Hobart, there is expected to be high interest in the development opportunity.

Submissions that provide a community benefit will also be considered. This could be through a sporting or recreational development that adds to the liveability of Hobart.

“We hope to receive a range of applications that demonstrate the diverse potential of the site,” a City of Hobart spokesperson said. “However, there are significant challenges associated with the topography and accessibility of the site, and applicants will need to show that they can adequately address those issues.

“It’s in the best interest of the community for the City to seek out viable uses for unused land.  All submissions in the EoI process will be carefully considered against a range of criteria to ensure the best outcome for our community.”

A second, smaller parcel of land is suitable for residential development, pending provision of services and access to the currently “land-locked” property.

Expressions of Interest for both properties will close on 28 April 2022. To obtain a copy of the EoI documentation, contact Devine Property at info@devineproperty.com.au
