Plan recognises Aboriginal heritage

A draft plan that will guide the City of Hobart’s work in relation to Aboriginal people and heritage in Tasmania has been released for public consultation.

The draft Aboriginal Commitment and Action Plan (ACAP) provides a framework and actions to recognise, support and promote Tasmanian Aboriginal heritage and culture within the community.

“For many years, Tasmania has been relatively silent about its Aboriginal history and, in particular, the devastating impacts of colonialism on Aboriginal people,” Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said.

“The development of this ACAP is an important step towards acknowledging our shared past and its ongoing impacts, and positioning the City of Hobart as a genuine and committed partner in achieving reconciliation.”

Key objectives of the draft plan include improved social inclusion and participation for Aboriginal people in Hobart; increased visibility of Aboriginal people and their language, heritage and culture; and to show leadership on reconciliation in Tasmania.

The draft plan sets out 21 actions across five themes that can be achieved by the City of Hobart within the next two years.

The draft plan was developed in consultation with Tasmanian Aboriginal stakeholders and feedback was obtained from Reconciliation Australia, which has provided its conditional endorsement.

Public comment on the draft ACAP is invited through Your Say Hobart until 15 November.
