Draft Waste Strategy

The City of Hobart has released its draft waste strategy, setting out a clear plan for a more sustainable Hobart just in time for this Saturday's Big Day of Circular Living Ideas in South Hobart.

The draft strategy outlines key actions, including the closure, rehabilitation and revitalisation of the McRobies Gully Waste Management Centre into a modern resource recovery hub.

To learn more and share your thoughts, the City's waste and engagement teams will be on hand at the Big Day of Circular Living Ideas on Saturday to field questions about the new strategy and receive community feedback.

Residents can also have their say on the Your Say Hobart website. Public comment on the draft waste management strategy is open until Sunday 4 May.

The City of Hobart is a proud sponsor of the Big Day of Circular Living Ideas, which is on this Saturday, 22 March, 10am to 3pm at the C3 Convention Centre in South Hobart.

Quotes to be attributed to Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds

"This strategy reflects the City of Hobart's deep commitment to finding practical and innovative ways to reduce waste and cut carbon emissions from Hobart's waste sector.

"Key elements of our new draft waste strategy include closing the McRobies Gully landfill site in South Hobart by 2030 and working more closely with industry and other councils to reduce waste at its source.

"We have also developed action plans to empower residents and the community to embrace a circular economy, maximising the recycling and re-use of materials to keep waste out of landfill.

"The simple act of sorting your waste materials before you put them in the bin is one of the most effective ways to reduce landfill. Putting food scraps and other organic materials into FOGO bins is another powerful step we can all take to create a more sustainable Hobart."
