Ho, ho, ho Hobart, Santa’s back!

After a two-year hiatus, Santa will return to Hobart’s streets for the 2022 Myer City of Hobart Christmas Pageant when the much-loved and sorely missed event returns on November 19.  

It will be a special celebration in more ways than one, with the event not only returning, but it will also be the 40th time the event has been held.  

The pageant regularly attracts 15,000 spectators and is the biggest in the state.   

City of Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said the pageant signifies the start of the festive season across southern Tasmania.  

“The City of Hobart and Christmas just hasn’t felt the same in recent years without the pageant,” Cr Reynolds said.  

“The return of the Christmas Pageant shows our city is moving on from what has been a challenging past three years. 

“We’re so happy that we are able to bring Santa Claus and the pageant back to central Hobart. It’s always so lovely to see the enthusiastic participants and the warm welcome they get from the crowd.” 

Myer Hobart Store Manager Kathleen Kelly said the entire Myer team was excited to be back involved with the Pageant after the forced two-year break.  

“It is such an institution in Hobart and something that has been enjoyed by generations - and with this year being the 40th anniversary it makes the Pageant even more special this year,” Ms Kelly said.  

“As the major sponsor of the event, we can’t wait to be part of the fun and excitement that it brings to the city and am sure that after a two-year hiatus it will be the best one yet.”  

Up to 65 community groups ranging from dancers, sporting clubs and multicultural organisations will participate in the pageant along with the highlight of the event, Santa rolling through Hobart on his big red sleigh.   

This year we are looking for 40 top entrants to participate and there are great prizes for the best floats including best Christmas themed entry, best community entry and other musical, dance categories.  

Expressions of interest are now open to participate in the pageant, applications close Tuesday 6 September 2022.
