Hobart families to experience the fun of Japanese Children’s Day
Published on 02 May 2024
The City of Hobart invites children and their families to get a taste of Japanese culture this Sunday as they celebrate 'Kodomo no hi' – Japanese Children's Day with traditional games, cultural performances, and food.
Welcoming and Inclusive City Portfolio Chair Cr Dr Zelinda Sherlock said the free Children’s Day celebration promises to be a fun day out for the whole family.
“People of all ages are invited to immerse themselves in an array of cultural activities and experiences, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of Japanese heritage,” Cr Dr Sherlock said.
“Children’s Day is a national public holiday in Japan, wishing children health and happiness and encouraging them to be strong and resilient.
“Having lived in Japan for nearly 14 years - kodomo no hi always brings back special memories.”
Cr Dr Sherlock said the City of Hobart’s Children's Day celebrations were in recognition of our close connection with our sister city, Yaizu in Japan.
“Our sister city relationship has flourished over nearly five decades through cultural exchange and collaboration,” she said.
“Through initiatives like the Children's Day celebration, both cities continue to nurture strong community ties and promote cross-cultural understanding.”
Highlights of the celebration include the chance to meet the adorable bonito fish Yai Chan, the beloved mascot of Yaizu City, along with activities such as crafting koinobori (carp streamers) and origami samurai helmets, dressing up in yukata (summer kimono), traditional Japanese games, taiko drumming, calligraphy, making Japanese sweets and Samurai and Ninja demonstrations.
Duncan Stewart from the Sakura Culture Centre will be showcasing Samurai and Ninja demonstrations at the event.
“Children’s day activities cherish and respect Japanese heritage, providing rich experiences with the express aim to celebrate their health, happiness and culture.
“It is a day providing opportunities for people to connect, learn and share about Japanese culture and a valued tradition that ultimately transcends borders to celebrate children of the world.”
The Japanese Children's Day celebration is open to all members of the community.
