Make a B-line for B-streets to get home faster
Published on 30 August 2024
The City of Hobart, in partnership with the Tasmanian Government, has joined forces to make it easier for drivers to exit the city during peak times between 3pm and 6pm.
As part of our recently endorsed Transport Strategy, cars, trucks and vans have not been forgotten, with the City identifying key routes to help you get where you need to be with less hassle and more time to spend with your family.
One of the key initiatives is the "Three Bs" – Brisbane, Bathurst, and Barrack streets.
These routes have been specifically chosen to help people navigate the city more reliably in the afternoon, with traffic signals prioritised to help drivers quickly access arterial routes and head for home helping avoid being stuck in traffic.
The City of Hobart's transport plan is designed to provide more choices for how people move around the city, whether by car, bus, walking, riding, or scooting.
Other streets in the city have signals timed to make it easier for people walking and remind drivers that better routes are available for moving into, out of and across our city.
Quotes to be attributed to City Mobility Portfolio Chair Ryan Posselt:
"Our city streets should work for people, not against them, no matter their transport choice.
“That’s why we’ve optimised traffic signals to prioritise certain roads.
“We’re making sure that drivers have a better experience crossing and exiting the city during the busiest times.
“We're continuously working collaboratively with the State Government to improve traffic flow and enhance the overall experience of moving through Hobart.
“Remember to choose a B-Street – Brisbane, Bathurst, or Barrack – to help you beat the traffic during peak hours.”
Quotes attributable to Contact Electrical electrician Michael Chiffey:
“I was recently made aware of this strategy by City of Hobart, I think it’s a great idea and makes perfect sense.
“Being a tradesperson, I know that time is valuable, so if I can bypass the congestion and save five minutes whilst reaching my next destination sooner.... I’m calling that a win.
“Having the prioritised B-streets will reduce traffic in the heart of the city.
“This will make transiting, parking and working in the middle of Hobart much easier for myself, colleagues and other contractors.”
