New Year’s Eve family fun and fireworks at the Regatta Grounds
Published on 24 December 2024
The City of Hobart is rolling out the welcome mat for a safe and fun New Year’s Eve celebration, starting with a family-friendly area at the Regatta Grounds.
The Regatta Grounds hill facing the Derwent will be transformed into a car-free picnic zone, perfect for families looking to enjoy the evening in a relaxed environment.
The Regatta Grounds will be open for free parking from 9am on New Year’s Eve, with the City of Hobart’s free shuttle bus running regularly between the city and waterfront.
A food van, public toilets, lighting, and the presence of the City of Hobart NYE Safety Angels will ensure everyone has a comfortable and safe experience.
For those heading to the waterfront, the city is putting pedestrian safety first. Roads between the waterfront and Davey Street will be closed to vehicles, creating a promenade-style space for people to wander and enjoy Hobart’s lively atmosphere.
An accessible viewing site for people who may need extra assistance or space will be available at Mawson Place, and a quiet area will be set up on Parliament Lawns for those seeking a more relaxed experience.
Revellers are also encouraged to plan ahead and consider public transport.
With the Sydney to Hobart yachts in port, the Taste of Summer in full swing and Hobart’s beautiful waterfront coming alive, this New Year’s Eve promises to be one to remember.
Quotes to be attributed to Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds:
“This year, we’re offering a dedicated viewing area on the grassy hill overlooking Macquarie Point and the Derwent.
“With plenty of space for picnic rugs and children to play, it’s a wonderful spot to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the fireworks at 9.30pm and midnight.
“There are few cities in the world where you can get as close to the water as you can in Hobart to watch the fireworks.
“But you don’t need to be on the water’s edge to enjoy the fireworks, with plenty of vantage points around Hobart to take in the spectacular display and views.
“Metro’s MIAB Nightrider buses and a centralised vehicle drop-off and pick-up zones make it easy for everyone to get home safely.”
