Intercity Cycleway to undergo urgent maintenance
Published on 29 March 2022
Urgent works on the Intercity Cycleway will force a closure of the track for four days from 5 – 8 April 2022.
The closure will be in place from 9am to 4pm on each day as repairs are undertaken, between Bay Road and Bromby Street in New Town. The closure will also effect the informal entrance at Clarendon Street.
“We’ve received a number of complaints from the community, and are acting upon these concerns to undertake these urgent repairs.” Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said.
Inspections have shown that sections of the track are slipping down the hill due to incorrect fill being used in the initial construction. This has led to cracks developing in the surface that have now become safety hazards to those using the track.
“We know how important the Intercity Cycleway is to so many commuters, and so we’re really aiming to cause as little disruption to users of the track,” Lord Mayor Reynolds said.
Signage will be placed at each end of the closure, with alternate route maps available for during the times. Due to the nature of the works, it is unfortunately not possible for the track to remain open while these repairs are being undertaken.
