The latest InsideOUT arts box installation is now on display in the Elizabeth Street Pier Forecourt, bringing a one-of-a-kind artistic experience to Hobart.

Hobart-based alternative photographer Peter Maarseveen has transformed one of the arts boxes into a Camera Obscura – a walk-in camera that provides a life-sized view of the world outside.

The second art box will be used as a gallery to showcase the prints processed onsite.

Mr Maarseveen’s Instantly Obscured invites people to experience the art of photography beyond the press of a button.

Using a walk-in Camera Obscura, Mr Maarseveen captures life-sized images of willing participants and processes them on-site to create unique negative prints.

These images, showcasing the Hobart community, will be displayed and added to throughout the project.

The exhibition, running until January 12, 2025, highlights the creativity and innovation of Tasmanian artists.

Quotes to be attributed to Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds:

“This latest exhibition features the work of photographic artist Peter Maarseveen, who uses alternative analogue processes to explore the art of image-making.

“His approach reminds us of the magic and craftsmanship behind photography, and I encourage everyone to visit and be part of this unique experience.”

Quotes to be attributed to photographer Peter Maarseveen:

“In today’s digital age people are so used to just clicking a button to capture an image, then instantly looking at the back of the camera to see what they have taken, deleting it if they don’t like what they have seen.

“With Instantly Obscured I am trying to remind people that there is a lot more to photography than just the press of a button.”
