Signs
The City of Hobart is responsible for ensuring that signage on private properties complies with planning regulations.
If you have a sign displayed on your property, it's important to understand whether you need approval under the applicable planning scheme.
Please feel free to call our duty planner on 03 6238 2711 to discuss your proposal.
Please note that these regulations may be altered when the Tasmanian Planning Scheme is eventually rolled out in the City of Hobart.
Do I need approval for my sign?
The need for planning approval for a sign depends on a range of factors, including:
- the type of sign (mounted on a wall or ground-based)
- the size of the sign
- the zoning of your property
- whether your property is heritage-listed or in a heritage precinct.
If your sign requires approval, you can apply for a planning permit through the City of Hobart. Fees may apply, and some applications may need to be publicly advertised.
Please feel free to call our duty planner on 03 6238 2711 to discuss your proposal.
What if my sign does not comply?
The City of Hobart is obligated to enforce correct application of the planning scheme.
If a sign is installed without approval, property owners may be asked to:
- apply for a permit
- modify the sign to meet requirements
- remove the sign if it does not comply.
