Castray Esplanade - Temporary light pole safety supports

An inspection of 14 light poles on Castray Esplanade found problems requiring their immediate replacement.

As replacement light poles are not currently available, we are installing temporary supports to ensure community safety.

These supports are expected to remain in place until the permanent poles can be installed in the second half of 2024.

Installation of the temporary supports

Where

The light poles are located between the intersection of Morrison Street and Salamanca Place, and 15 Castray Esplanade.

9 pole supports will be installed on Salamanca Lawn.
4 supports will be installed in the on-street parking space next to the pole:
- Corner of Castray Esplanade and Salamanca Place (in front of Blue Eyed Seafood)
- In front Silos Apartments, 1 Castray Esplanade
- In front 7 Castray Esplanade
- In front 9 Castray Esplanade
1 support will be installed on the footpath where it is wide enough to still allow pedestrian movement (In front 15 Castray Esplanade)

When

Works will begin Monday 20 November and is expected to be completed by mid-December.

Works will take place 7 am – 4 pm Monday to Friday.

What to expect

Works will involve:

Propping up the existing poles using steel bars and concrete blocks
Installing fences around the temporary support structures to enhance safety and prevent unauthorized access. We will wrap the fences in scrim (printed fabric) to reduce the visual impact.
Placing temporary water bollards around support structures in on-street car parks to prevent vehicles bumping them

We will make every effort to minimise disruption to property owners, occupiers, businesses, traffic and pedestrians.

Vehicle and pedestrian access

Temporary traffic management will be in place during construction to allow the works to be carried out safely. Emergency vehicle access will be maintained at all times.

Some on-street parking will be temporarily unavailable in the immediate work area for safety reasons.

At times sections of the footpath will be closed for propping works, with temporary pedestrian crossings in place as required.
