Additional netball courts and updated lawn bowls infrastructure are being constructed and installed at the New Town Sporting Precinct, as part of a $1.6 million project.

Works on this project, dubbed the New Town Netball Courts and Bowls Upgrade, will begin from February 2025 and continue through to the middle of the year.

The project will result in:
  • The conversion of a disused, overgrown bowling green into two outdoor netball courts, complete with LED floodlights and fencing, for the Southern Tasmania Netball Association (STNA)

  • The installation of new shade infrastructure and synthetic grass around the edges of an in-use bowling green at the Buckingham Bowls Club

The additional netball courts will allow for more teams to participate in the sport, allowing for greater participating and promoting physical activity for all age groups.

Infrastructure upgrades at the bowls club will result in enhanced comfort and sun protection for both players and spectators, creating a more enjoyable space for socialising and competing.

There is not expected to be any significant disruption to the community while the works take place.

The Tasmanian Government has committed $1.5 million towards this project and the overall development of the New Town Sporting Precinct Master Plan.

New Town Sporting Precinct Master Plan

This project is a small step in achieving the ambition set out in the New Town Sporting Precinct Master Plan, which was endorsed by the Hobart City Council in 2024.

The plan sets out to preserve and improve the facility, which is currently used by more than 300,000 people each year, as a vital sporting and community hub.
