Pinnacle Road closure for critical maintenance
Leading into summer each year we carry out critical maintenance on Pinnacle Road in Wellington Park to prepare for the peak tourist season.
The road is the key route for vehicles travelling up kunanyi/Mt Wellington to The Springs and the mountain summit for its glorious views.
We’ve scheduled this year’s works for after the iconic Point to Pinnacle event.
To ensure the safety of the public and our staff during these roadworks Pinnacle Road will be closed on Monday 18 November and is scheduled to re-open by the close of business on Thursday 21 November.
If things go well we’ll try to open the road earlier.
It is only the road that is closed - the mountain's tracks and trails and visitor facilities remain open. And for the second two days (20 and 21 November) the road will open up to The Springs.
The works will be carried out in two stages:
Days 1-2: Pinnacle Road will be closed at Gate 1 (Bracken Lane, Wellington Park entrance) November 18 and 19.
Day 3-4: Pinnacle Road will be closed at Gate 3 (above The Springs) November 20 -21 for the rest of the closure.
All walking and bike tracks on kunanyi/Mt Wellington will remain open, but for safety reasons cyclists and pedestrians will not be allowed on Pinnacle Road where it is closed for maintenance.
Road works will include:
- stormwater works to clear drains & pipes and replace culverts
- road pavement and road verge repairs
- roadside vegetation trimming to improve the line of sight for drivers
- signage, guard rail etc.

Always check the Pinnacle Road status page before heading up the mountain.
