Queenborough Oval in Sandy Bay is set to regain its crown as one of Hobart's premier sporting venues under a $3.8 million redevelopment project.

Starting in November 2024 the one year project will ensure Queenborough Oval continues to serve as a central hub for community sport and recreation for years to come.

The redevelopment plans include:

  •  New building facility that will accommodate four new changeroom and associated facilities, a medical room and rooftop viewing terrace.
  •  The Scott Palfreyman Stand will be made more accessible with a new ramp, walkway, stairwell and accessible lift.
  • The changerooms currently in the grandstand will be converted into umpire facilities and a large multi-purpose space with a hardstand viewing area out the front joining the new and existing buildings.
  • New unisex public toilets at the back of the grandstand.

A sporting and community hub

Queenborough Oval is home to the South Hobart Sandy Bay Cricket Club, Hutchins Old Boys Football Club and Sandy Bay Junior Football Club.

These clubs collectively field 29 teams. Sandy Bay Junior Football Club boasts one of the highest representations of female players in Tasmania, with five teams ranging from under-10s to under-18s.

The new facilities will provide inclusive and modern amenities for the more than 400 players currently using the oval, and are expected to draw more players to the clubs that call Queenborough Oval home.

The project will be carried out in two stages to minimise disruption to players and spectators.

Stage 1: Construction of new changeroom building scheduled for completion by mid 2025.

Stage 2: Refurbishment of existing changerooms and construction of new public amenities to be completed by the end of 2025.

The improvements will provide contemporary facilities that will ensure inclusive sporting participation in AFL and cricket for all ages.

This project has been made possible by a $2 million investment from the Tasmanian Government and $1.8 million from the City of Hobart.
