Residential parking permits

Residential parking permits

Residential parking zones exist on streets that commuters use a lot for parking. For example, streets within walking distance to the city centre. This is so local residents have a better chance of parking near their property.

Commuters must follow the parking restriction periods in these residential streets. These are usually one or two hours, shown on the parking signs. This stops cars parking there all day.

If you live in an area like this and don't have a driveway or garage, you can apply for a permit to park all day in these zones.

There is a limit of two permits for each household. This depends on the off-street parking you have available. In some circumstances, you may be able to get three permits per household. You need to apply to the Chief Executive Officer in writing for this.

Applying for a permit

You can apply for a new permit or renew your permit by completing the online form:

Apply online

We will check the number of spaces have been allocated by the Residential Parking Scheme in your area. Approval of the application is based on availability. You must also agree to the permit conditions as part of your application.

Please place your permit on the lower passenger side of the vehicle's windscreen. It must be in a non-tinted area with all details clearly visible. The permit is only valid in parking zones near your household and does not guarantee a space. These zones are identified by the wording on the sign 'Authorised Residents Excepted'.

If you sell your car, please remove the permit sticker.

  • Barrack Street – between Liverpool and Goulburn streets
  • Murray Street – between Melville and Brisbane streets
  • Campbell Street – between Brisbane and Patrick streets

Residents in and near the CBD

There is also three other forms of assistance if you live in or near the CBD.

CBD Parking Area

Parking assistance

The three types of assistance available to residents of the CBD zone are:

A - Resident permit for on-street resident permit zone

You may be eligible for a residential parking permit for a zone outside of the CBD. This would be on a single identified street section only. For example, Melville Street between Barrack and Harrington streets. This permit allows your vehicle to park all day in designated resident parking zones.

B - Resident permit allowing free parking on metered space until 10 am

You may be eligible for a permit that allows you to park in a parking meter space until 10 am without:

  • paying a fee
  • observing the time limit until 10 am.

This would be on a single identified street section only. For example, Liverpool Street between Barrack Street and Harrington Street.

The very centre of the CBD has very high parking demand. This means permits cannot be issued for streets in the block bounded by:

  • Harrington Street
  • Bathurst Street
  • Argyle Street
  • Macquarie Street.

This also applies to Elizabeth Street between Bathurst and Brisbane streets.

Permits can be issued for other metered on-street spaces within the CBD zone.

C - Priority on waiting list for City of Hobart long term off-street car parking space

You can get priority on the waiting lists for parking spaces in one of our long term off-street car parks.
