Bin requests and enquiries

Please find information below on how to request changes to bin sizes or collections, bin latches, and report lost or damaged bins and missed collections.

Requests for bins

A standard residential household is entitled to a:

  • 120-litre rubbish bin
  • 240-litre recycling bin
  • 240-litre Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) bin.

If you don't receive FOGO collection, you can apply to opt-in at any time.

You can find forms below to upgrade your rubbish bin, and to opt-in or out of weekly or fortnightly FOGO collection.

Larger rubbish bin

If you are the property owner you may request a larger (240-litre) rubbish bin for a fee. If you have a medical condition that requires the need for a larger waste bin, you may be entitled to a rebate.

Weekly or fortnightly FOGO bin collection

Residents that don't already have a service and would like to opt-in, can do so by completing one of the forms below depending on whether a weekly or fortnightly service is preferred.

You can also use the below forms to change whether your FOGO is collected fortnightly or weekly.

Please note: there are different annual fees for fortnightly and weekly collection. The current fees can be found under 'Wheelie bins – Upgrades/Repairs/Replacement' on the fees and charges page.

Cancel FOGO collection

If you do not want your FOGO bin, you must fit into one of our four criteria:

  • Adequate home compost being utilised
  • Financial burden
  • Alternative kerbside service used
  • Medical reasons

You can apply to opt out of the service by completing the online form, including supporting documentation for the appropriate criteria.

If you live in a particularly windy or steep location and are experiencing issues with your bin lid flying open, Hobart residents can request 1 free bin latch to help keep the bin closed. It is recommended that the recycling bin is prioritised as this tends to contain loose, light material and is the most prone to becoming windblown.

These latches automatically open when the bin is emptied.

Bin latches are available for collection only. If you require additional latches they are available for purchase online by various stockists. The latches used by the City are the SafeWaste Multi-Fit lid latch.

The provision of free latches is dependent on stock availability and may be withdrawn if stock runs out.
