Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What are the standard bins for a household?

A standard residential household is entitled to a:

  • 120-litre rubbish bin
  • 240-litre recycling bin
  • 240-litre Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) bin.

If you don't receive FOGO collection, you can request to opt-in at any time.

Can I have a larger rubbish bin?

If you are the property owner you may request a larger (240-litre) rubbish bin for a fee. If you have a medical condition that requires the need for a larger waste bin, you may be entitled to a rebate.

Can I change my FOGO collection?

Yes, you can use this form to request to:

  • opt-in
  • opt-out
  • change your collection to weekly or fortnightly.

Please note: there are different annual fees for fortnightly and weekly collection. The current fees can be found under 'Wheelie bins – Upgrades/Repairs/Replacement' on the fees and charges page.

If you would like to opt-out of FOGO collection, you must fit into one of our four criteria:

  • adequate home compost being utilised
  • financial burden
  • alternative kerbside service used
  • medical reasons.

Supporting documentation for the appropriate criteria is required.

Bin latch

Bin latch

Bin latches are an easy to use solution for residents experiencing issues with bins falling over or lids flying open due to living in particularly steep or windy locations.

These latches automatically release when emptied by the collections truck but remain closed when accidently tipped over.

Hobart residents can purchase a bin latch from the Hobart Council Centre located at 16 Elizabeth Street, Hobart for $8. They are available for collection only.

Latches are particularly useful for the recycling bin as this tends to contain loose, light material and is the most prone to becoming windblown.

A minimum of 1.5kg of material is needed in the bin for it to automatically release when collected.
