The City of Hobart reopens safe dog walking areas

Published on 16 May 2018

The City of Hobart reopens dog walking areas that have been assessed by experts and are safe for use after the damage caused by last week’s extreme weather.

The parks open to public are the Queens Domain, Cornelian Bay, Nutgrove Beach and Rangeview Crescent Reserve, Lenah Valley. More are expected to open as clean-up operations continue.

Errol Flynn Reserve and Short Beach on Marieville Esplanade, Sandy Bay, remain closed to ensure public safety.

Off-lead and on-lead areas

Area between The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania and Marieville Esplanade playground

While Errol Flynn Reserve and Short Beach on Marieville Esplanade, Sandy Bay remain closed, dogs will be allowed off-lead in the open area between The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania and the Marieville Esplanade playground. This is an interim solution only. Dog walkers are asked to ensure they keep their dogs out of the playground.

Queens Domain

Off-lead areas:

  • Area between the Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre and the Domain Tennis Centre.
  • The Wireless Station and general summit area.
  • Regatta Grounds and Soldiers Memorial Oval.

On-lead areas include Max’s Infinity Loop (Joggers Loop) and the Soldiers Memorial Avenue.

Cornelian Bay

Off-lead exercise area (east of the foreshore carpark), up to Cornelian Bay Point.

Nutgrove Beach, Sandy Bay

With great views of the River Derwent this is a very special place to take your pooch. There has been extensive damage to a number of access points. Please be careful and follow sign directions.

On-lead: 9 am-3 pm.

Off-lead: 3 pm-9 am.

Blinking Billy Beach, Sandy Bay

Unfortunately, much of the sand in this off-lead dog walking area has been washed away, but a climb over the rocks will get your dog in the water for a dip.

Rangeview Crescent Reserve, Lenah Valley

This open grassland area surrounded by houses and bushland, has both off-lead and on-lead areas.
